I Me and Myself

I've been slacking. I have no F5s for the longest time. I was busy. Don't make me explain. I'm still busy.

Oh, did I forget to tell you that I am busy?

=====================================================

1) Tell us about where you live:

I remember when i was little, this is what my parents let me memorize...

"I am Maita Toral, I am 5 years old, I live at...."

Parang lalaban sa Little Miss Philippines diba?

Time passed and now I am living a gazillion miles away from home. Its a 2-storey house in a semi-rural town in Alabama.

2) If you could change one thing about your home, what would it be?

I would trim the bushes and install heaters for winter.

3) Do you do laundry on a regular schedule?

Yes. Regular. I regularly slack. And mahal ang pabango, so sayang ang amoy sa damit. Hahahaha!

4) Describe the place that you sleep:

Need I say more? ;)

5) This morning: was it easy or difficult to start the day?

IT WAS DIFFICULT! I have to do jumping jacks to wake me up. I don't know if its the weather or me. hehehe!!

Okay Maita, BACK TO WORK!

Songs of my life

I've been slacking on this one. Weeks and weeks of slacking. I was literally harassed to do this. Yes Abbie, I was! HAHAAHA!!!

Anyway, we decided to do the songs of our lives... However, I would like to make a disclaimer. These are my songs... FOR NOW! Who knows! This might change in a day or two. ;)

===========================================================

1. If you could pick your own theme song, what would it be?

LIFE by Desiree. I want to view life in a positive way. This song helps me.

2. Now be honest...if others had to pick a song that described you, what would they choose?

PRETTY WOMAN!!! No doubt this is it!... Oh wait, I thought the question was, how I describe myself... HAHAHAHAHA!!! Oh what the heck! Don't kill me for being honest!

3. What song would be/was the first dance at your wedding?

SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME by Sting. I don't want any other version. I can even see the scene in my imagination.

4. What song gets stuck in your head most often?

There are a few:

KISS ME - because of that son of a b--ch video in you-tube!
BAD DAY/YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL - because that is the song often played here (when I say often, I mean every hour OFTEN)

5. What song would you want played at your funeral?

TOGETHER AGAIN by Janet Jackson. Well, we'll all be together in one place soon, right? ;)

Howell... these are my quick answer to the F5 for today... better this than nothing, right? =)

Things I Learned (4th of series)

I still haven't caught up with sleep. Its just the middle of the week and yet I feel that I will just fall off my chair any moment. Its Chito's turn to drive now. I really can't. Too sleepy na talaga. So here are the things that I did to keep me awake.

1. COFFEE - This is not permitted for ulcers. However, I have no choice. I need caffeine in my system. I have pain killers though. Not that I have taken one already. =P

2. COKE - same as number 1.

I don't care. As long as it keeps me awake (though only for a few minutes)... just an update, paubos na ang kalahating visine ko dito... hehehehe

4. BORHERDING - for those who do not know this, this is a concentrated menthol stick. Great for headaches. Imagine the methol effect if you put this just under your nose. magigising ka talaga sa hapdi.

5. HURTING YOURSELF - sampal, kurot, sabunot... three effective ways to keep you awake for the meantime

6. EAT - This would keep you awake. Although I need to go to the vending machine to get something to eat. BUT going there is like a maze... takes minutes off your working hours (hehehehe!!)

7. GO TO THE BATHROOM AND TALK TO YOURSELF - sumasagot naman pag kinakausap ko. hehehehe...

8. WALK - i walk to the coffee machine, i walk to the water dispenser, i walk to the vendo machine, i walk to the bathroom... (you can even walk to the HUGE parking lot if you want)

9. TALK TO SOMEONE - Chito and I have different offices so hindi sya kausap ko. Sending occassional IM helps a lot! It better to talk to someone... however, if you cannot understand their accent.... DON'T! (please refer to the 3rd of series)

10. DO JUMPING JACKS - i sometimes do it in the bathroom. If I do it somewhere public, they might think I'm going mad.

11. EYE RUBBING - they said rubbing your eyes is bad. WELL, this is helpful especially when you are in a meeting.

These are the things I have done FOR NOW. I can't tell you what is more effective. I just do what I think is applicable to the situation.

Ever wondered why I did not include washing my face? Well, if I do that, lahat ng concealers ko matatanggal. =P

The Things That I Learned (3rd of series)

It would be normal for me to have jetlags because there is a 13 hour time difference from the Philippines. This would depend on the person. Some would have a short time overcoming it. Well, I'm not one of those lucky people. And its taking an effect on my everyday living....

==================================================

If you still have jetlag, don't ever attempt to ask Southerners questions that would require long explanations

We were in a mall looking for a good cellphone deal. Our mistake was, we were asking questions... not answerable by just a yes or a no. So the attendant, a local, explained the different plans, the pros and cons, the different networks, different cellphone units, etc. So the three of us were intently listening to her. After a few minutes, we said thank you and left. So the HR person (mind you, she's an american too) asked us to explain a little. I answered, "I was hoping you were listening since I really didn't understand a word she said". We all laughed.

If you still have jetlag, don't try to stay awake by working

Its been 6 days and yet i still have jetlag. Actually, i haven't had a decent sleep since i left Manila. I'm trying to keep myself busy by answering emails, reading reports, etc. Well, if you have a choice, DON'T! I was reading something on my computer here at the office when my head fell almost hitting the keyboards. Would it be better if i put seatbelts on my chair to prevent me from falling? I dont know where i could buy calamansi here. hehehehe...

If you have jetlag, don't set meetings especially with Southerners

This is number 1 and number 2 COMBINED! I tell you, I am trying to keep myself awake while trying to understand what they're saying. Parusa to the max ito! =)

I hope i get over this jetlag. Its killing me... literally! hehehehe.... (you could imagine how I managed to drive at 85mph)

The Things That I Learned (2nd of series)

Now, here's the most important thing in my life that I need to work on... feeding myself!!! My main challenge living here in the US (its good that I know how to drive to go to fastfood restaurants if all else fails).

And here is my first try feeding myself....

===============================================

If you don't know how to cook, don't try to experiment the day before you need it.

There is no cafeteria in the refinery. I have no choice. I have to bring lunch. Big problem because I don't know how to cook. So when I went to Wal-Mart, I bought the easiest thing to cook. Spaghetti. And guess what, even the easiest of cooking, I was not successful. Totally not successful. But I have no choice. I'm pressed for time and I have to bring that and have it for lunch. Take a guess how my lunch was...

If you don't know how to cook, don't think twice. Go for the reliable. SPAM.

I don't know what I'm thinking, why I thought of cooking spaghetti. Maybe its my love for pasta. Maybe its my craving for Italian food. Maybe, maybe, maybe... I tell you, for whatever reason you have... DON'T. Go for the idiot proof alternative.... SPAM!!! (unless of course if you do have some time to spend for some cooking experiments.. refer to number 1)

If you don't know how to cook and you only know SPAM, go for the other idiot proof alternatives.

Would you like to eat Spam everyday of your life? DUH?!?! Life has full of choices. So does lunches. There's the best ingenious invention of the 20th century... TV DINNERS!! You want Italian, Mexican or American? Just name it and you got it. Warning though, just watch your weight... you cannot get anything easy in life... laging may kapalit. Just thank God you did not sell your soul for good food. ;)

Or if you have the resources, better bring a cook. It would lessen your stress. =P

The Things That I Learned

I just arrived here in Pascagoula, Mississippi for a 2-year assignment. Its not my first time in the US but its my first time to stay this long in a foreign country. Cultures do differ.

Here are some of my learnings.

=================================================

Don't be a navigator if you haven't slept a wink

I haven't slept from the time I left manila. Siguro idlip, pero sleep talaga, wala. So on our 2nd day here in the US, the HR admin was driving the car and I was the one sitting in front. All of us (Chito, HR and me) are new to the area so we all know nothing here. =P

Don't be a navigator if you don't know how to read maps

Accepted fact is we don't know really how to read maps. In the Philippines, we just ask for directions. One time we asked for directions to an apartment complex. the person on the other line described the directions based on landmarks ang not the streets ( e.g. when you see Wal-Mart, turn left, then you will see McDonalds, turn right... etc).

Don't be a navigator especially if its a combination of 1 and 2

Do I still need to explain?

hehehehehehe...

I Love the 80s!!!

I love the 80s. This is the epitome of my childhood. Memories...

Goes with these memories are the following questions usually found in slum books (these were common in the 80s):

What is your motto?
Define love?
Define crush?
Who is your crush?
Who is your first kiss? (and people would always write "my mom"... who are you kidding?!?)

Hey, I made five questions!!! Maybe we could have a friday just to answer these questions (in relation to this 80's thing, ofcourse...) hehehe....

BUT, much as I love the 80s, I am still late in posting my answers...

==============================================================

1) Favourite movie of the 1980s?

E.T., Clash of the Titans, Never Ending Story, Indiana Jones (trilogy), Back to the Future (trilogy), Labyrinth, Bagets, Hotshots, Dear Heart, etc etc etc... OH and I almost forgot, Two Moon Junction... mwhehehehe!

2) Favourite musician/group of the 1980s?

Depeche Mode, Spandau Ballet, Tears for Fears, Duran Duran at higit sa lahat... MENUDO!!! (please be reminded that this is the 80's... no kid thinks straight during those days)

3) Favourite TV show of the 1980s?

Voltes V, Saturday Fun Machine, Diamos, Mazinger-Z, Wonderful World of Disney, Mork and Mindy

4) Favourite invention of the 1980s?

ATARI!!! (is tumbang preso invented in the 80's too?)

5) World Event from the 1980s that stands out in your mind?

People Power and Post-It notes were invented. =)

Rainy Friday

1. What type of mood are you generally in on a rainy day?

I am always lazy on a rainy day. Lazy to wake up early. Lazy to go to work. Too lazy to actually move. Sayang ang lamig...

2. What are your favorite things to do when the weather is gloomy?

I'm too lazy to do even my favorite things. I'm too lazy to move nga eh.

3. Have you ever been kissed in the rain?

The question should be --- Have I ever been kissed???

4. After the rain stops, do you continue what you were doing, or do you run outside to do something else?

Can I just run outside and leave work? If that is permissible, then I WILL RUN OUTSIDE AND DO SOMETHING ELSE!!! =P

5. What is your favorite drink/food to have when it's raining outside?

Nothing. I'm too lazy to eat.

Oh, and did I fail mention that I am really too lazy? ;)

The Boob Tube, The Silver Screen, & You

1) When you were little what was your favorite TV show?

What day of the week do you want? Hehehehe... I always watch the Disney movie every Friday at 7PM. It is entertaining and always has a lesson. As a kid, I would always analyze things. And I grew up this way.... always analyzing what is wrong with me.

2) What was your favorite movie?

Favorite? Hmm... I don't have one but what made me cry the most was Meet Joe Black. I don't know. Maybe I was just vulnerable at that time.

3) What is your favorite TV show currently?

Currently, I always watch the CSI series. Or if CSI is not airing, I always watch the Crime Suspense channel. More on forensic documentaries. I now know how to commit a perfect murder.

To all -- Be afraid. Be very afraid.

4) What is the best movie you have seen so far this year?

This year ha. I can say Eight Below is the best. I love dogs. And the dogs here are great actors. Full of emotions talaga. =)

5) If someone was going to make a movie or TV show about your life, who would play you and why?

I would portray myself. At least I wouldn't be acting. Baka this would be the start of my acting career. =)

Da Vinci Code

Today is the first day showing of the Da Vinci Code. I've watched movies really bashing our faith. And this is just the tip of the iceberg.

But here is the deal:

ALL SM Malls will not show it.

The City of Manila banned this in all their cinemas.

Talk about overreacting. The more they do this, the more the public wants to watch it. Simple reverse psychology.

Para namang di tayo dumaan sa pagkabata. Mas may thrill pag pinagbawal... (wait, that didn't sound good)

Friday the 13th

No, its not Jason's day. I just thought of this title because of the given topic for our Friday Five.

Weird as I am, I really haven't thought about these questions. Now I learned, there is always someone better than you.

Damn.

And now, morbidity aside, here is our next batch of Friday questions...

================================
If you knew you were going to die on at specific day at a specific time, what's the last...

1. song you would listen to?

Would I still care to listen to a song if I know I'm going to die???

2. book you would read?

That would be the least thing that I would do.

3. person you would talk to?

Hmm... siguro my family. I don't have a "sweetie" to talk to eh. =P

4. food you would eat?

All the sweets that I craved. I would also like to try those pricey restaurants (considering I still have the money) and see if it is really worth the price. If its not, sasabihin ko sa kanila yun. I'll be an irate customer.

BUT, eating too much would make me fat. And since I spent all my money from eating at pricey restaurants, I cannot afford to buy a customized coffin so I could easily fit in.

Oopps. Too morbid.

5. goal you would accomplish?

--I want to go bungee jumping, sky diving, white water rafting and all the extreme sports that I did not even dare try. =)

Friday Five

I am not a writer. I find it hard to think of topics to write about. Thanks to Ty for suggesting Friday Five, even for just a day in a week, we now have a common topic to write about.

I remembered in grade school, my usual mistakes in exams were NOT FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS... AGAIN, at this age, I did not follow instructions for this Friday Five. Hahahaha!! Bad habits die hard.

And now, our first Friday Five...

================================================

1.) Do you like your birth-name? Why?

-- Yeah, I like my birthname... it gives a sound of class (or is it just me)

2.) If you could change your name to anything else, what would it be?

-- Nah! Wouldn't change my name... as I've said, it classy.

3.) What names would you consider giving your children?

-- I'm considering Mikaela and Miguel. May class din ba? Hehehe!!

4.) If you had a band, what would you name it, and why?

-- Hmmm... Kankaloos?

5.) Is there a name that you completely hate? Why?

-- PORTIA!! (that is without batting an eyelash) I don't know. I just don't want the sound of it. Sorry...

Till next week!!

Time Flies..

I will be leaving end of this month.

I received the news in March. I will be assigned in the US for two years. I was in denial for days. After a week and a half's time, I came to the acceptance stage. Two months still far away. Still have time to do things. I did not think about it that much. And my regular life continued.

Its now May 3. Twenty-six days before my tentative departure date. I haven't done much. Friends keep calling me to schedule my despedida. I have no more free weekends. I have things to do in the office. I have to prepare my lists. And I could go on and and on...

Now, I am back in denial.

So sad...

Attachments

We had our company outing last Saturday at White Rock Beach Resort in Olongapo. I will be assigned (or should i say exiled) in the US for two years. There are a lot of uncertainties on my mind... but one thing is for sure, this will be my last summer outing with my team. Sadly, i will be leaving them soon.

I was their supervisor for two years. We had our ups and downs as a team, but we would always get through it. We may be clanish but collectively, we do shine. People would say that I am their talent manager and they are my talents. All 16 of them...

Attachment was the last thing on my mind before i joined the team. I thought wrong.

I hope their new supervisor(s) would continue to bring out the best in them. That's the only legacy that i can leave them.

Call me sentimental, but i'll surely miss them.

TORTURE

Early this morning, I got a text from one of my close friends...

"Mga miswa, I'm officially engaged. He asked me a few days ago."

I don't cuss but I did after reading the text. It's not that I am not happy for her. Just another friend gone mad. Hehehe...

---------------------------------------------------

Just the day before, I was chatting with my staff. One of our topics was dining alone in public. I told her that I usually do that. Naawa sya sakin. That's when I thought, "Am I normal?"... Dinner time came (yes, I'm still here at that time), she approached me and asked, "gusto mo ng kasamang mag-dinner?"

I really felt her "awa" was heartfelt.

---------------------------------------------------

My seatmate just got married this month. She keeps on complaining that her wedding ring is too big (or thick) for her finger. She asked me to wear it (with the engagement ring) to see if it would look good on me. Kung may pamahiin man dun, I don't know, so I wore the rings. Bagay daw sakin ang may wedding ring.

Yeah... rub it in.

---------------------------------------------------

An HR staff sent me an email. She was requesting me to submit the forms for CHANGE OF NAME AND STATUS. Obviously, it was wrongly sent. Funny thing is, her immediate supervisor replied to the email, "Please confirm if this is true..."

Ayaw maniwala.

--------------------------------------------------

AND the manifesto for the bus and room list came out. I can't find my name. I discovered that they gave me a different surname. My team called me and jokingly said "nagasawa ka na pala, di ka man lang nagimbita."

---------------------------------------------------
A girl can only take so much...

At last!... my own blah blah site

At last! Here it is! My friends have been bugging me to start a blog. Lahat daw sila meron na. Is this the status quo? Para ba tong atari at high-cut na reebok?

I have hesitations why i don't start this stuff... (1) i am sometimes grammatically challenged; (2) i am NOT an organized writer; and (3) my definition of a paragraph is only up to 3 sentences. ALSO, my friends' blogs are hard acts to follow (sipsip to you guys).

hehehehe!!
----------------------------------
Just this morning, i received an email talking about reasons for being single. Since it made me laugh, i forwarded it to some of my friends. They all reacted. Sabi nila, i rated 9 out of the 11. Yes, I am single. So what??? Deal with it.

(here it is..)

9. Dala ang bigat ng kahapon
may kasabihan nga, "how can u look forward when u keep looking back?" walang mangyayari sa love life mo kung dala mo pa ang kabiguan na dinulot ng nakaraan mo. walang sense ang magpakabitter dahil in the end, lalo ka lang papanget. panget na nga, bitter pa. tsaka wag kang matakot masaktan kung gusto mo magmahal muli. laging kaakibat ng love ang pain dahil hindi ka masasaktan kung hindi ka nagmahal. at isa pa, wag ka ring matakot na kunin ang pagkakataon kung nandiyan na sa harap mo. pano mo malalaman na masarap ang chocolate kung hindi mo titikman?

10. Masyadong masyado
